Caslon Cafe eCute Shinagawa in Tokyo, Japan

A Great Place to Buy a Book, Coffee, or Magazine Before Catching a Bullet Train

Caslon Cafe eCute Shinagawa in Tokyo, Japan

I was a bit cautious of trying out Caslon Cafe eCute at first due to the assumption that it would be full of noisy tourist families with screaming babies as is normally the case with station restaurants and cafes but I was pleasantly surprised to see that my fellow customers seemed to be of a different demographic completely than those in the main station eateries.

Most of the people around me were businessmen and women and the entire environment was rather quiet and relaxing. The whole place is very nicely made with a very clean spacious modern design letting in lots of light and a very welcome use of real plants, which I very rarely see in Tokyo.

I love the fact that Caslon Cafe eCute is connected to a book store that has a pretty big variety of novels, manga, magazines, etc all of which are unfortunately Japanese though if you’re just in Japan for a holiday I highly recommend checking out a Japanese magazine if you want something to look at while you eat lunch or drink your coffee as it may show you something that you would have missed out on otherwise during your travels (i.e. photos of a new travel destination, Japanese fashion, or a Japanese take on a western movie or celebrity). Of course you can always read something on your Kindle.

Speaking of food I was very happy with the cleanliness of the staff and overall environment (especially after just having lunch in a separate restaurant in Shinjuku where the waitress literally rubbed her hands over the entirety of my knife and fork before giving them to me).

I ordered a “Drink Set” which got me an iced tea and a cake of my choice for around 800 yen. The tea was actually really good and the cake was definitely a lot better than the numerous wannabe bakeries around Tokyo.

I really liked Caslon Cafe eCute and highly recommend it especially if you’re going to be travelling through Shinagawa. Walk past the underwhelming restaurants near the train platforms and ignore any preconceptions you may have about a place called “eCute”. Caslon Cafe eCute is really worth checking out.

How to Get to Caslon Cafe eCute in Shinagawa

Caslon Cafe eCute is located within the ticket gates in the massive Shinagawa Station, upstairs in the “eCute” shopping centre. This location makes it great if you’re catching a shinkansen (bullet train) and you want somewhere nice to sit and relax while you’re waiting for your train.

You can also use it if you’re transferring at Shinagawa for any other train line which makes it very convenient and a nice place to cut up the trip home after work and wait out the insane rush hour on the Tokyo train system.
