This fantastic Hawaiian cafe / restaurant is really exceptional, especially when you take into consideration that it’s located within Tokyo where the average business encourages smoking, has limited seating and an equally limited selection of food and drinks on the menu.
Island Veggie blows all of these expectations out of the water by not only having an absolutely huge selection of food and drinks (first timers prepare to spend at least five to ten minutes weighing up your options before ordering) but also offering more than enough vegetarian and vegan choices for the environmentally conscious consumer and even going so far as to serve macrobiotic food, something that is next to impossible to find in Tokyo, let alone Japan as a whole.
Of course the majority of the food is Hawaiian though there’s also a nice fusion of Japanese cuisine on offer and more than enough variety in the deli where you can mix and match your own custom dish from several separate dishes that even the pickiest eater should be satisfied. There’s also a huge selection of different drinks to choose from ranging some coffees, teas, juices, smoothies and even freshly made hot lemonade which I was delighted to see included half a fresh lemon (literally!) and tasted amazing.
The average cost of food and drink will set you back around 1000 yen, which is pretty incredible considering the quality of what’s on offer here. I chose to enjoy my selection on the second floor seating area which is massive and really well designed with a variety of seating options such as lounges, chairs and bar stools to choose from.
The whole area is really well lit and you can tell a lot of thought has gone into the materials used and the furnishings chosen to help create a warm yet modern vibe.
I can’t recommend Island Veggie Hawaiian Macrobiotic enough and can definitely see myself returning soon to give something else on the menu a go. It really is an exceptional place.

Directions: Island Veggie Hawaiian Macrobiotic (or “Island Veggie” for short) is located within just a minute’s walk from Hiro-o Station on the Hibiya Line. To get to Hiro-o (sometimes called “Hiroo” or “Hiro”), take the Yamanote Line from Shibuya to Ebisu and transfer to the Hibiya line there. Hiro-o is just one stop away and is well worth checking out due to it’s quality import and health food stores as well as the very international feel and multicultural local residents which make for a nice break from the typical noisy and busy Tokyo suburb.
The majority of the businesses in Hiro-o are staffed by native level English speakers and the overall service in general in the area is much closer to Western sensibilities than the usual Japanese business (i.e. less screaming at pedestrians and more genuine smiles and friendly service).
To get to Island Veggie, take Exit 2 from Hiro-o Station and walk to the main intersection on your right. Turn right and walk down this rather popular shopping street. Head down the first sidestreet to your right and you should be able to see the entrance to Island Veggie on your left.
