Antico Caffe Al Avis in Tokyo, Japan

25Cafes in Tokyo Japan: Antico Caffe Al Avis Cafe in Futako Tamagawa, Tokyo Japan

Antico Caffe Al Avis is obviously an Italian inspired cafe and has other locations in Nagoya, Osaka, Yokohama and even another in Tokyo within the Atre shopping complex within Ebisu Station.

This Futako Tamagawa cafe looks absolutely stunning with it’s Italian design aesthetic, wooden features, stone tables and delicate lighting via the chandelier.

I was actually a bit wary of ordering here as it definitely looks like a place that would break someone’s budget though surprisingly not only did the food look as good as the interior design but the pricing was shockingly average.

I did have a bit of trouble ordering however as while I can read Japanese, I don’t know any Italian at all so trying to understand the Japanese reading of the Italian food and drink names was inconvenient to say the least. There was no English menu so if you can’t read Japanese, be prepared to bring someone who can. The staff were very friendly though couldn’t really explain what the Italian foods were without using, well, the Italian names for them.

This place is definitely the best value for money that I have seen. Make sure to check it out if you’re looking for some place to eat in Tokyo. Futako Tamagawa may not be on everyone’s must see travel list but there’s some great shopping to be had here and some nice views of the Tamagawa River and surrounding area that’s just fifteen minutes on train from Shibuya.

  1. It looks interesting, but is it worth going all the way out to Futako-Tamagawa just to check it out? I’m planning on coming to Tokyo later this year, and I want to check out some of the cafes that you’ve reviewed here, but it seems a bit far away.

If you could recommend maybe 3 or 4 cafes in Tokyo proper, which ones would you suggest?

    • I wouldn’t travel to Futako Tamagawa just for Antico though if you’re heading down that way it’s worth a look.

Because Tokyo is so spread out it’s really hard to recommend specific cafes to check out as their convenience will depend really on where you’re staying in the city. For example there’s some great cafes in Roppongi but if you’re staying in Shibuya it’s not really worth the trip unless you’re doing something else in that area.

Having said that, Eat More Greens in Azabu Juban and Bio Cafe and Vegan Healing Cafe in Shibuya are three of my personal favourites.

  2. Antico cafe is all over the place in Tokyo. I used to work in Roppongi Hills and there was one right above the Starbucks near the entrance. I was always shocked at how the Starbucks was more popular, because it was more expensive and the food and coffee at Antico were miles better. Anyway, as far as quality to price go, Antico can’t be beat. There are places dotted around with better coffee, but for a nationwide chain, the coffee (esp. Espresso) at Antico is actually very good.
