One of the interesting things about the construction of the massive Tokyo Sky Tree (which is officially the tallest free standing tower in the world and the second tallest building in the world) is that it’s being built in one of the oldest most traditional areas of Tokyo that stands in huge contrast to the modern architecture featured in this ambitious project.

As a result, while the main Sky Tree building itself is state of the art, the majority of the buildings around it are rather old family run businesses that until now had been pretty much untouched by the developments in say, Roppongi, Shinjuku and Shibuya.

A perfect example of this contrast is the cafe/bakery Bon Ton Kimuraya which is quite literally directly under Tokyo Sky Tree. It’s run by a genuinely sweet couple and has a very nice small town charm due to it’s interior design and collection of nick-knacks spread throughout the space.

25Cafes in Tokyo Japan: Bon Ton Kimuraya Cafe and Bakery Near Tokyo Sky Tree You won’t find much in the way of a main course here but there is an impressive selection of pastries to choose from as well as a wide choice of drinks.

A coffee and pastry will set you back around 800 yen and an English menu is available for those unable to read the Japanese on the chalkboard.

This cafe is in no way a five star establishment, but it doesn’t try to be and the owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome and relaxed with real friendliness which is definitely refreshing after being confronted with all the fake politeness present in so many other Tokyo businesses. I can definitely see myself coming back again, purely due to the genuine warmth of the service. Here’s hoping Mon Ton Kimuraya keeps it’s warmth as the area continues to develop.
