The Theatre Coffee is a fresh little coffee stand that is very much inspired by international design aesthetics while conjuring feelings of Hollywood’s Golden Age, obviously a deliberate artistic choice due to it’s proximity to the Tokyo Theatre Orb which is also on the same floor and frequently holds plays, musicals and other theatrical productions.
There’s a good selection of coffee and sweets on offer for a reasonable price and decent sized serving though the seating is rather limited and more designed for people on the go or waiting for their show to start in the nearby theatre. If you’d rather a more comfortable seating and table arrangement and some wider food choices, I highly recommend trying The Theatre Table which is right next to The Theatre Coffee and has a massive selection of indoor seating options to choose from in addition to a wonderful terrace which offers a great place to relax while enjoying the fantastic eleven floors high view of Shibuya.
As well as the menu from The Theatre Coffee, The Theatre Table also serves a variety of more substantial food choices such as pasta, pizza, steak, sandwiches and soups, most of which come as part of a set depending on the time of day. I ordered a soup which came with some delicious bread and access to the gorgeously designed salad and drink bar which featured some fantastic choice of complementary dishes and an impressive variety of teas (organic and regular), coffee and juices. The quality and choice of the food was beyond anything I had been expecting for the price I paid for the lunch set (just 1300 yen!) and I still can’t believe just how much of a bargain it was.
The Theatre Table also has a nice variety of alcoholic beverages and the food menu does change later in the evening and consequently increases in price (upwards 5000 yen for a meal) which may affect your decision to try it depending on your budget.
All the food looks and tastes fantastic and is presented extremely well and the staff, many of whom are bilingual, were very professional and friendly. The main joy for me though was the overall design which impressed me on all levels. Wether it was the warm blue home-kitchen salad and drink bar, the subtle flower arrangements or the wonderful lighting, I really appreciated the sheer effort and artistic skill that went into the interior design which really made my time here all the more special.

Directions: The Theatre Table and The Theatre Coffee are located within the brand new shopping complex, Shibuya Hikarie ShinQs on the 11th floor. This new building is just outside the East Exit of Shibuya Station and is quite easy to find once out of the station (literally just across the road). Take extra care to use the correct exit though as using one of the many others can lead to a lot of frustration and wandering around.
