Nice initiative! As a six year resident and soon returnee to Osaka, I hated places with smoking, and the crappy attempts to muffle with glass and air con. Wonderful! Hope you get down to Osaka to do some reviews as well. Best wishes, Ben

I was listening to your interview on GPOD. You mentioned how difficult it was to find addresses / locations of restaurants in Japan.

Have you tried using the Tabelog website? if you set the area to Tokyo and type in the restaurant name, even in English, it will bring up a page with all the info you need including the location on Google maps. For example, here is Park Side Cafe in Ueno:

Great website! I really like that every cafe you write about is 100% non-smoking. I’m a regular traveller to Japan, and coming from Australia where you can’t smoke indoors at cafes or restaurants, it’s always a bit of a shock to the system when I arrive and most of the cafes have smoking sections (and the non-smoking sections are hardly any better in those venues)! You mentioned that you didn’t go to the Gundam cafe as it’s not non-smoking – I’ve been there and you didn’t miss out on much (except the strong scent of cigarettes, ha!). Good to know that the AKB48 cafe next door is non-smoking. Like the other commenter, I have to say that your non-smoking cafe review blog is a very cool great initiative.

  p.s. Yeah, my experience is the bigger the gimmick, the worse the food. This is why I’m never really too hyped about theme cafes in Tokyo.
